How Much Car Insurance Do You Really Need in Washington and Oregon?

By Kathleen Arlint, CICUpdated August 14, 20261 min read

The short answer

More than the state minimum, in most cases. Washington and Oregon both set liability limits a single serious crash can pass, and anything above your limit comes out of your own savings.

  • Washington requires 25/50/10. Oregon requires 25/50/20, plus personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage.
  • Those are legal minimums, not a recommendation. One hospital stay or one totaled late model vehicle can pass them.
  • Raising liability limits usually costs less per month than people expect, and it is the coverage standing between a crash and your savings.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage matters on our roads, because not every driver carries enough.
  • Collision and comprehensive are a separate decision, driven by what your vehicle is worth and whether it is financed.

Questions people ask us next

Is the state minimum the same as full coverage?

No, and there is no policy actually called full coverage. People usually mean liability plus collision and comprehensive, which is a much broader package than the state minimum. The state minimum is liability only, so it pays for the people and property you damage and nothing for your own vehicle. Ask us what your policy includes and we will read it with you.

Does my Washington policy cover me when I drive in Oregon?

Yes. A personal auto policy written in Washington follows you into Oregon and the rest of the country, and most policies adjust to meet the other state's minimum requirements when you drive there. What it does not do is give you Oregon's required coverages back home, so if you move across the river your policy should be rewritten rather than left alone. Call us at 360-573-3080 before the move rather than after.

How much more does it cost to raise my liability limits?

Less than most people expect, though it depends on your driving history, your vehicles, and the carrier. The largest part of an auto premium buys the first layer of coverage, so the additional layers are priced lower. The honest answer is we have to quote it. We can show you the same policy at two or three sets of limits side by side, at no cost, and you can decide from real numbers.

What is uninsured motorist property damage?

It repairs your own vehicle when an uninsured driver hits you and there is nobody to collect from. Oregon insurers are required to offer at least 20,000 dollars of it. In Washington it is a coverage you can ask for rather than one you are offered by default, which is why it is worth asking.

Where this comes from

General information, not a binding quote or a confirmation of coverage. Coverage depends on the policy you buy and the state you live in, so check your own policy or ask us.
