Auto Insurance FAQ
How much car insurance do I need in Washington or Oregon?
Washington requires at least 25,000 dollars of liability for injury to one person, 50,000 dollars per accident, and 10,000 dollars for property damage. Oregon requires the same 25,000 and 50,000 injury limits but 20,000 dollars for property damage, plus personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage. Those are legal minimums, not the level we usually recommend. One serious crash can cost far more, so we typically suggest higher liability limits and solid uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage to protect your savings. We're happy to walk through the right limits for you.
What are PIP, uninsured motorist coverage, and UMPD, and what do Washington and Oregon require?
Personal injury protection, or PIP, pays medical bills for you and your passengers no matter who caused the crash. Oregon requires it on every personal auto policy, with at least 15,000 dollars of medical coverage per person. In Washington it is optional, but insurers must offer it and it is added to your policy unless you reject it in writing; the base package covers 10,000 dollars of medical bills per person. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage pays for your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough, and in both states it is included at limits matching your liability coverage unless you sign a form choosing otherwise. UMPD, uninsured motorist property damage, repairs your own car after an uninsured driver hits it; Oregon insurers must offer at least 20,000 dollars of it. Our coverage guide above walks through each of these state by state, and we are happy to review your policy with you.
What affects my auto insurance rate?
Carriers look at factors like your driving history, the vehicles you drive, how far you commute, your coverage limits and deductibles, and the discounts you qualify for. Because we're independent, we compare several carriers at once to find the one that rates your situation most favorably, rather than being tied to a single company's pricing.
Should I bundle my auto and home insurance?
Often yes. Most carriers offer a multi-policy discount that can lower both your auto and home premiums, and it makes managing your coverage simpler. Bundling is not automatically the cheapest option in every case, which is why we compare bundled and separate quotes across carriers before making a recommendation.
